Service Learning at Southdowns (LSU)

Southdowns Preschool Center has once again been selected to participate in the LSU Service Learning Project.  This program is designed to allow LSU students to engage in school activities while enrolled at the university.  Students participate in observations of the classroom, teacher interviews, school-wide activities, as well as small group and whole class lessons with our preschoolers.

Mentor Teachers serve as models for the LSU participants who have the opportunity to:

  • enhance their university learning experience
  • connect theory to practice
  • work in a context that provides an opportunity to apply abstract concepts
  • develop a sense of usefulness, purpose, and self-respect
  • improve communication and leadership skills
  • apply problem-solving and decision making skills
  • develop an increased awareness of community needs
  • prepare for the work world
